Tononi claims that consciousness is Integrated Information. Tononi provides a quantitative way to measure Integrated Information. The Integrated Information Theory (IIT) can be tested by calculating whether the neural correlates of consciousness produce Integrated Information.

Tononi motivates his account by his phenomenal observation that consciousness has two striking features that we must explain jointly. First, consciousness is informative. Second, consciousness is integrated. He develops a measure of Integrated Information to explain both these features.

In addition to finding a quantitative measure that combines these two striking features of consciousness, Tononi also shows how the measure of integrated information can help explain the systematic differences between conscious states.
