James “Jim” Beran

James “Jim” Beran discovered a fascination for consciousness while pursuing his bachelor’s degree in psychology (B.A. Lewis & Clark College).  His career, however, led him through law school (J.D. University of Oregon) and, after a short time in general practice of law, to study electrical engineering (M.S.E.E. Stanford University).  Jim became a patent attorney, spending most of his career at Xerox Corporation’s Palo Alto Research Center (PARC).  While at PARC, he began attending Toward a Science of Consciousness conferences in Tucson in the 1990s; more recently, he has also attended the related conferences elsewhere.   Now retired, Jim continues to pursue the scientific study of consciousness as an independent researcher.  Although several of his recent presentations at The Science of Consciousness (TSC) conferences focus on biological evolution of consciousness, his current interest is machine consciousness.
