The current platform says the following about abortion:
Family. We support the family as the basic unit of society and uphold the sanctity of human life including opposition to abortion except in cases of rape, incest, fatal fetal deformities, or serious jeopardy to the life or health of the mother.
Those who support this camp would like to add the following sentence to this plank: "The law should pose no obstacle to those seeking abortion for the exceptional circumstances listed here."
With the repeal of Roe vs. Wade, moderate positions on abortion are not being accommodated. Too often, abortion opponents are writing laws that restrict abortion in almost all circumstances, even in the cases described in the UUP platform. A solid majority of Americans support legal abortion in cases of rape and incest, as well as in cases where it is medically necessary to preserve a mother's life and health. Any law that stands in the way of such a common sense approach is not a law that the United Utah Party should support.
Abortion is one of the most controversial issues in modern society, with strong opinions on both sides of the debate. While some people believe that abortion is a woman’s right and should be available in all circumstances, others believe that it is the taking of an innocent life and should be prohibited in all cases. A moderate position on abortion recognizes the complexity of the issue and seeks to balance the rights of the mother with the rights of the unborn child.
One of the key principles of a moderate position on abortion is that it should be safe, legal, and rare. This means that women should have access to safe and legal abortion services, but that these services should not be used as a form of birth control. Instead, efforts should be made to prevent unintended pregnancies through comprehensive sex education, access to birth control, and support for families.
At the same time, a moderate position on abortion acknowledges the value of human life and seeks to protect the rights of the unborn child. This means that late-term abortions should be prohibited except in cases where the mother’s life is in danger or the fetus has severe abnormalities that are incompatible with life. Additionally, there should be reasonable restrictions on abortion procedures, such as parental consent requirements for minors and waiting periods to ensure that women have time to consider all of their options.
Another important element of a moderate position on abortion is the recognition that the issue is complex and deeply personal. While some people may be vehemently opposed to abortion on moral or religious grounds, others may have had experiences that make them feel strongly in favor of it. It is important to respect the diversity of opinions on this issue and to work together to find common ground.
Ultimately, a moderate position on abortion seeks to balance the rights of the mother with the rights of the unborn child. It recognizes that the issue is complex and deeply personal, and that there are no easy answers. Instead, it seeks to promote comprehensive sex education, access to birth control, and support for families in order to prevent unintended pregnancies. At the same time, it recognizes the value of human life and seeks to protect the rights of the unborn child through reasonable restrictions on abortion procedures. By taking a moderate position on abortion, we can work together to find common ground and promote a society that values both life and individual freedom.
