The best you can get through causal perception is an abstract description of the quale, and a description is not the colorness quality. Abstract text, alone, can’t tell you what redness is like. You simply need to experience, or directly apprehend the collorness quality you are describing, then say “THAT is redness.” Once you do that, you will have a physical definition for what “red” means. The abstract data Frank Jackson’s Mary got via causal perception enabled her to describe everything about how redness behaves. But until she directly apprehended what she was describing, she couldn’t know the quality she was describing.
