Controversy tends to polarize around the tradeoff between how much reward the miners get vs how much reward the community can achieve from the work being done by the miners. But if our goal is to maximize both of these, we can all agree that increased efficiency is our friend. If we can decrease the amount of work that needs to be done to achieve better results, we can then free up better paid people doing the work to do more of what the people want than just mining. Maximizing both of these in a fair way while minimizing the amount of work that needs to be done is the goal of EIP 1559.
