Is “Forking” a good strategy?

Open source software has the notion of ‘forking’ a repository and then freely making changes to it. An example is when the Ethereum Classic community forked from the standard Ether community. Canonizer also has the idea of forking camps, as you can see in the “Controversy” help page.

While these are a specific examples of what this topic is about, it is about more than that. This topic is about any kind of separation, building of walls, seeking to frustrate, and so on.
