Dear John, Brent encourages me to post my string theory consciousness model on the canonizer. This model is equivalent to yours except that the consciousness module is the Calabi-Yau compact-manifold subspace instead of a brane. Brent further proposes to make the Higher Dimensional camp contain both your model and mine on an equal level- all with your permission of course. Here is a description of my camp. Richard Ruquist CYR hypothesis of phenomenal consciousness The Calabi-Yau-Ruquist (CYR) hypothesis of phenomenal consciousness is a version of material dualism based on the Calabi-Yau Compact Manifold of compactified dimensions in string theory. In essence it corresponds to the Smythies-Carr (CS) hypothesis but with the CS source for consciousness, i.e., a brane parallel to the brane of the physical world, replaced by an invisible subspace of nature with remarkable properties. This universal subspace contains a 3D array of string-theory Calabi-Yau (CY) elements, numbering 10^90 per cc, due to the compactification of 6 dimensions as 3 dimensions expanded in the Big Bang. In this representation, consciousness is based on the hypothesis that a natural system which mimics the mathematics of natural numbers (like Peano arithmetic) will have a universal property (like energy in a thermodynamic system) called consciousness. Given that there are 10^500 distinct CY elements according to string theory, that is more than enough for every CY element in the universe to be distinct. And given astronomical observations that the fine-structure constant varies monotonically across the universe, the CY elements are likely ordered. So in this system concept consciousness is emergent from an arithmetical subspace. Another remarkable property of this subspace is that because the CY elements are motionless, they form a frictionless Bose-Einstein Condensate(BEC), where information can be transmitted instantly. In string theory elements of this subspace also contain the laws of physics and they collectively control particle interactions. This is therefore also a candidate for the God canonizer. From the Stanford Philosophy site: "The leading contemporary version of the Representational Theory of Mind, the Computational Theory of Mind (CTM), claims that the brain is a kind of computer and that mental processes are computations. According to CTM, cognitive states are constituted by computational relations to mental representations of various kinds, and cognitive processes are sequences of such states." Our hypothesis is closer to a branch of computationalism that (following Godel) claims that consciousness emerging from Peano Arithmetic in turn can create energy and matter like in the Big Bang, i.e., NATURAL NUMBERS => CONSCIOUSNESS => ENERGY=> MATTER => HUMAN => HUMAN REPRESENTATION But that is not a necessary evolutionary path for a representational string theory of consciousness where downward causation continually interacts with upward consciousness to create an inner self within the mental representation of outside and internal worlds of independent matter and energy, i.e., NATURAL NUMBERS => CONSCIOUSNESS => DOWNWARD CAUSATION => HUMAN REPRESENTATION Downward causation is key to the whole process providing for self-referential feedback loops and of course for thinking based on intention. Ruquist proposes that BEC entanglement between different levels of consciousness allows for feedback looping. Here, like in Godel's derivation of the Incompleteness Theorems, the math includes complexity levels or stages of proof from the most fundamental level of the natural numbers through a hierarchy of ever more general states (46 for the Incompleteness theorems). Downward causation then refers to higher states being able to manipulate the configuration of entangled lower states. Likewise, physical waking consciousness may be entangled with the mind representation allowing intention to operate across their boundaries. We do not postulate a mechanism for intention. John, Brent has encouraged me to post a camp that is quite similar to yours except that the source of the consciousness module is not a brane but rather the Calabi-Yau Compact Manifold subspace. He also suggests that both our camps be sub to a Higher Dimensional camp which he will install if you approve. Hi John, I was just wondering if you knew you were listed in the Wikipedia article on Qualia as one of a group of qualia proponents: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qualia#John_R._Smythies_and_C._L._Hardin Also, in the talk section for that page at least one person is suggesting this section be rewritten and improved: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Qualia#Smythies_section_needs_rewriting I completely agree with them that it can be vastly improved and I'd like to embark on improving this. I think your camp statement in the canonizer.com Smythies-Carr Hypothosis page here: http://canonizer.com/topic.asp/88/14 is a great, concise, up to date, and definitive declaration of what you, and anyone else in your camp believe. It is just what this person is asking for and what I think it needs. So, rather than duplicate all of this in wikipedia, where anyone could deface it, I think it could be very briefly stated there, with a link to this 'smythies-carr' hypothossis camp at canonizer.com for more definitive information. I think it would also be good to point out other information about the Smythies-Carr hypothesis compared to other competing theories represented at canonizer.com. For example, while there are more popular theories at this level (i.e. brain-identity theories) at the higher consciousness is representational and real level, as ever more experts contribute to this open survey the consciousness is representational and real camp is clearly extending it's lead as having more scientific consensus than any other theory. Anyway, I'm working on some draft ideas for improving this entry in the wikipedia article on qualia, wanted your thoughts and wondered if you would be interested in helping out with such to make sure I get things right? I would love to hear any ideas about how you might think it could be improved or anything so I could get any of it appropriately integrated into any planned improvements. Thanks Brent Allsop
